The Etowah Youth Orchestras’ Beginning & Intermediate Strings Program provides violin, viola, and cello lessons at schools throughout Etowah County.
Classes meet two days a week, and are offered to fourth through seventh grade students (grade levels vary per school).
Classes include instruction both on the string instrument itself, and basic musical instruction in introductory music theory and music history.
Students learn various musical styles, including classical, bluegrass, and even rock and roll. Program participants have the opportunity to work with the EYO’s exclusive collection of electric string instruments.
Students perform throughout the year, both in their schools and at a closing Spring Formal Concert at the end of the school year that features the students from all participating schools. This year’s final concert will include the opportunity for the students to work with nationally-recognized violinist Mark Wood of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Students have the opportunity to perform both as a member of a large ensemble and as a soloist or a member of a small group.
In addition, each year the students in the Beginning & Intermediate String Program travel to Birmingham to hear a performance by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.
The Beginning & Intermediate Strings Program is under the direction of EYO Associate Conductor Roland Lister. Mr. Lister has over 30 years experience teaching strings in the public schools.
Financial Aid is available through the Etowah Youth Orchestras for students wishing to participate in this program. In addition, each year the EYO awards scholarships for private instruction and the EYO’s Summer Strings Camp to program participants.
Mr. Lister will be visiting your student’s school soon! Please watch for more information about how your student can become a part of the nationally celebrated Etowah Youth Orchestras!
