10 Questions with:

Derryck Gleaton

About Derryck:
I was born on August 30, 1988 in Charleston, South Carolina where I lived until I was six. Then my family and I moved to Columbus, Georgia. In the sixth grade, I started playing viola. I lived in Columbus until about 2 years ago when I moved to Anniston, Alabama where I currently live. I began playing in the Etowah Youth Orchestra in the Fall of 2003. In feburary 2004 I attended the Alabame All-State Orchestra Festival where I recieved second chair viola. I will attend the All-state orchestra festival this year too. This is now my second year in the Etowah youth orchestra. I also play in the Etowah youth symphony honor strings orchestra, and the Jacksonville State University Community Orchestra.

1. How did your musical career begin?
I began viola in the sixth grade when I entered the orchestra program at my school. I entered orchestra because I wanted to try somerthing diffrent. So when i got into the class, the teacher asked everyone what instrument the wanted to play. So I said violin at first. Then she said that I looked big enough to play the viola. So thats how I started.

2. Who are your primary musical influences?
Vanessa Mae, Bond, and Regina Carter

3. What do you like to listen to when you aren't playing your instrument?
When Im not playing my instrument I usually like to listen to R&B and Hip-Hop except on occasions when I feel the need to listen to stuff like smooth jazz and classical.

4. What are your hobbies outside of music?
Outside of music I like: Going to the mall, to the movies, and watching TV.

5. What has been your greatest opportunity provided to you because of your musical talent?
Because of my musical talent, my greatest opportunity would have to be when I recieved the "Assistant Principle Violist" chair in the Alabama All-State Festival Orchestra last year.

6. What are your favorite movies or television shows?
My favorite movies, I think, would have to be all three of the Austin Powers movies (especially the newest one, Goldmember). My favorite TV show is Mad TV.

7. You can have dinner with any four people, living
or dead. Who would they be?

Martin Luther King Jr., Tania Davis-viola and Hailey Ecker- first violin from the string quartert "Bond", and ,of course, Jesus

8. What are your plans after high school?
I know I'm going to college after high school. Hopefully a music college. I plan on going to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. I also want to be a pop/rock/jazz/neoclassical/hip-hop violinist/violist on a major record label.

9. Who is your favorite historical figure?
Martin Luther King Jr.

10. Describe yourself in four words.
