10 Questions with:

Corey Finlay

About Corey:

My name is Corey Finlay. I am a sophomore at Oxford High School where I am part of the Jazz Band and Pep Band on alto sax and Symphonic Band, Friday night marching band, and Competition marching band on clarinet. I also attend Parker Memorial Baptist Church where I play clarinet in their Wind Ensemble. I have participated in All-County Honor Band twice, All-District Honor Band, University of Motavello Honor Band, and University of Alabama Birmingham Honor Band once. I have also participated in Solo and Ensemble for the past two years winning superior ratings for both solos and ensembles on clarinet and alto sax. I have been part of the Etowah Youth Symphony Orchestra now for two years.

1. How did your musical career begin?
My musical career began in the 6th grade when I joined the beginner band on clarinet. Since then I have joined many other bands and ensembles both in and outside of school and learned additional instruments.

2. Who are your primary musical influences?
My primary musical influences are my band directors: Mr.Chris Pennigton, Mr. J.T. Spann, Mr. Will Campbell, and my friends and other band members who play with me and challenge me to higher musical performance.

3. What do you like to listen to when you aren't playing your instrument?
When I am not playing, I enjoy listening to other band music. I especially enjoy listening to DCI music. I also enjoy classical and contemporary Christian music.

4. What are your hobbies outside of music?
My hobbies outside of music include scrapbooking, reading, photography and computers.

5. What has been your greatest opportunity provided to you because of your musical talent?
The greatest opportunity because of my musical talent would have to be the performance tour to England with EYO the summer of 2005. It gave me the opportunity to see parts of the world I may have never otherwise seen and a chance to play with other talented musicians.

6. What are your favorite movies or television shows?
My favorite movies would probably have to be The Man In The Iron Mask and The Count of Monte Christo. My favorite TV show would probably be CSI.

7. You can have dinner with any four people, living or dead. Who would they be?
If I could have dinner with any 4 people they would be 1) Jesus because he died for me, 2) David Holsinger because he is a great composer, 3)Dr. Gainey (UAB music professor) because there is a lot she could teach me, and 4) Sara Tucker (former Oxford High School drum major) because she is a great person who has done a lot to help me.

8. What are your plans after high school?
I am not sure what exactly I want to do but I am considering a career in music.

9. Who is your favorite historical figure?
My favorite historical figure is Jesus Christ my Lord and Saviour.

10. Describe yourself in four words.
Musical, Determined, Diligent, Serious.
